Quick View - Booming aerospace industry looks to expand

The head of the Federación Mexicana de la Industria Aeroespacial (FMIA, the National Aerospace Federation) has claimed that the country's booming aerospace industry could generate US$12bn in exports by the end of the decade.

Analysis

The statements by Carlos Bello Roch came ahead of the industry's annual summit in Querétaro, a city of 2m people that, in recent years, has positioned itself as the hub of the aerospace industry. Apart from the US$12bn in exports, the industry could boast 110,000 jobs and up to 450 different companies by then, with a growing number of Mexican firms participating in the market (which is currently dominated by foreign aerospace firms), particularly in areas linked to defence. In 2012, the sector generated exports of US$4.3bn, and had 260 companies employing 31,000 workers. The projected exports by 2020 would make Mexico one of the world's leading aerospace exporters, ahead of Brazil and Spain.
